St Ives SLSC win the Cornish Stillwater Competition

St Ives Surf Life Saving Club competed in and won the Cornish Stillwater Nipper Championships at Penzance Leisure Centre, over the weekends of 10th and 17th February. The club took a 56-strong squad to the Frostbite Competition over the consecutive weekends and competed against 14 other Cornish clubs in the competition, to grab the top spot in Cornwall.

The members, aged from 8-13 years, competed in a variety of individual and team events using fins, towing manikins and paddling on boards where they gained points for the overall team. Some also gained individual accolades with gold, silver or bronze medals for their efforts. The St Ives team won a total of 21 Gold, 27 Silver and 27 Bronze medals and in addition, scored the most points in the competition since 2013.

The Head Nipper Coach, James Fox who was newly appointed in September last year said,  ‘I am thrilled that we won the competition this year. The children have put in such a lot of hard work and it is great to see them get rewarded for it. This is a team event and everyone who was part of our team, had a part to play in winning the competition.’

The Nippers and the coaches are now looking forward to competing in the National Competition in Cardiff at the end of the month.  James said ‘Now, we have turned our attention to training for the National competition. We are hoping to be able to take another good size team to Cardiff, where we will compete against Surf Life Saving Clubs from all over the country. Our team is strong and the children are determined so it should be a great weekend. ’
